Dinner: Campfire Baked Potato
Ingredients:
Large potatoes, one per person (Russet potatoes are ideal for their size and texture)
Optional toppings: butter, cheese, sour cream, chives, bacon bits, salt, and pepper
Instructions:
Preparation at Home: Wash the potatoes thoroughly and dry them. If you prefer, you can pre-wrap the potatoes in aluminum foil before leaving for your trip. This wrapping should include a few slits in the potato to prevent steam build-up.
At Camp: Once you have a campfire going and coals have formed, place the foil-wrapped potatoes in the outer edges of the campfire where they can cook evenly without burning. You can also nestle them into the hot coals if you're careful.
Cooking Time: Allow the potatoes to cook for about 45-60 minutes, depending on their size. Turn them occasionally to ensure they cook evenly on all sides.
Checking for Doneness: Carefully remove one potato using tongs or a stick and check for doneness by piercing it with a fork or knife. It should be soft inside.
Serving: Once cooked, carefully open the foil (watch out for steam), make a slit in the top of the potato, and fluff the inside with a fork. Add your favorite toppings and enjoy.
Difficulty: Easy
The preparation and cooking process is straightforward, requiring no special skills. The main challenge lies in timing and safely managing the hot potatoes and coals.
Weight Level: Moderate
Practicality:
Campfire baked potatoes are highly practical for camping, especially for trips where you have the ability to carry fresh produce and have access to a campfire. They require minimal preparation and can be customized with a variety of toppings to suit individual tastes, making them a versatile meal option. Additionally, the cooking process adds to the camping experience, providing warmth and a focal point for socializing around the fire.
