Dinner: Campfire Pizza
Ingredients:
Pre-made pizza dough (store-bought or homemade and pre-rolled)
Pizza sauce (canned or in a squeeze bottle for ease of transport)
Cheese (mozzarella is a classic choice, but any meltable cheese will do)
Toppings of choice (pepperoni, pre-cooked sausage, vegetables, etc.)
Oil or non-stick spray for the cooking surface
Equipment:
Cast iron skillet, Dutch oven, or a heavy-duty aluminum foil
Spatula
Campfire with a grill grate
Instructions:
Prepare the Fire: Build a campfire and let it burn down to a bed of coals with some low flames, ideal for cooking.
Assemble the Pizza: If using a skillet or Dutch oven, lightly oil the bottom. Place your dough in the skillet or on a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil. Spread a thin layer of sauce over the dough, then add cheese and your chosen toppings.
Cooking Method:
Skillet/Dutch Oven: Place the skillet or Dutch oven on the grill grate over the fire. If possible, cover with a lid to help melt the cheese and cook the toppings. Cook until the bottom of the crust is crispy and the cheese is melted, about 10-15 minutes, depending on the heat of your fire.
Aluminum Foil: If you're using foil, place your pizza directly on the grill grate or on coals at the edge of the fire. Cover with another piece of foil to create a "pizza packet." Cook, checking frequently, until the crust is crispy and the cheese has melted, about 10-15 minutes.
Serve: Carefully remove the pizza from the fire. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Difficulty: Moderate
The main challenge lies in temperature control to ensure even cooking without burning the crust. Using pre-made dough and toppings simplifies the process.
Weight Level: Moderate
Practicality:
Campfire pizza is a practical option for camping trips, especially if you're car camping or have the means to transport the ingredients safely. It offers a delightful break from traditional campfire meals and can be a fun group activity, allowing everyone to customize their pizza slice.
